Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the questions that we are often asked - if you have a question that we haven't answered, please contact us and we will do our best to help.

How do I arrange a funeral at one of your Woodland Burial Parks?

Either by contacting us directly, or asking the funeral director assisting you to do so on your behalf. We very much encourage you to come and visit the park if you are considering holding a funeral ceremony here.

How much will a grave cost?

The cost of a grave or ashes plot varies according to the chosen location in the woodland. Current prices are included in our brochures.

Do I have to use a funeral director?

If you want to make all the funeral arrangements yourself, we will do our best to provide appropriate information and assistance where we can. We would recommend that families take advice from The Natural Death Centre to ensure you are fully appraised of the requirements involved in organising a funeral yourself.

What sort of coffin is acceptable?

All coffins must be made of biodegradable materials. No metal or zinc lined coffins or caskets are permitted. We request that linings and fittings of the coffin are also biodegradable.

How much time do we have for the funeral?

We allow a minimum of 2 hours for every funeral. (It may be possible to book additional time if needed.)

Can people be buried together?

Yes, all of our graves are normally prepared to a double depth, to accommodate two burials. (They may be used for single occupancy if required.)

Must there be a religious ceremony?

No, the type of ceremony is entirely your choice. We welcome people of all faiths and those of none.

Is the woodland consecrated?

No, but individual graves may be blessed at the time of burial in accordance with your faith.

What happens if people who want to attend a funeral or visit have limited mobility?

We have chauffeured buggies available to transport visitors around each of our parks.

Can photographs be taken at the funeral?

Yes, although this is clearly at the discretion of the family concerned.

Can ashes be buried loose or do they have to be in an urn?

Ashes can be buried loose. If a container is used it must be made of biodegradable material and not contain any plastic bag.

Can I bring my dog?

Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a short lead

Will I be able to buy my grave before I die?

Yes, if that is your preference. In doing so you can ensure that your wishes will be met, while significant financial advantages will be gained by purchasing at today's prices.

Do you have a pay-by-instalment plan?

Yes, for graves and ashes plots purchased in advance of the time of need. We also accept payment by credit cards

What happens to my money if I buy a grave?

A secure trust fund has been created to safeguard purchasers’ rights. Four independent trustees oversee the trust. A percentage of each purchase is held by the trust, to fund the long-term maintenance of our parks and the provision of their services.

Can I / my family choose the position of the grave?

Yes, you are welcome to choose a grave from those currently available. At any one time several burial circles will be available to choose from in different areas of the wood.

How is the grave marked?

Graves and ashes plots may be marked by a wooden memorial post if the family wish. The exact coordinates of each grave is digitally recorded and held on record in our office, ensuring the grave can be located even if no memorial is in place.

How do I know that building will not occur on the land once I’m buried?

Official planning policies are particularly restrictive as to types of permitted development of land that has been used for burials.

What will happen in the future?

When the parks are full, the land is intended to revert to natural woodland and will be placed under the long-term protection of the trust.
